N.Kiruthigan of Grade 8 won the 1st place at District Level and 3rd place at Provincial Level in Creative Writing.
H.Solomon Rajaram of Grade 9 won the 2nd place at District Level in Creative Writing.

Mathematics & Science Competition – 2007
A.Sanjayan won the 1st Place at Provincial Level in the Mathematics & Science Quiz Competition-2007 (English Medium).
General
Our College quiz team became Runners up at District Level in the quiz competition
organised by St. Henry’s College, Illavalai in connection with their Centenary Celebrations.
R.Gajanan was ranked 1st in the written test at District Level in the above competition.
Our junior team became Runners up at District level in the Bible quiz organised by the Ceylon Bible Society.
G.Aaron Melvin (Primary) and T.Sam Niroshan (Intermediate) secured 1st place at
District Level in the Light of the World Speech Contest conducted by the Ceylon Bible Society.
Our School was placed 1st in the Agricultural Competition at District Level.
Jude Shiyanthan (Junior) and Sivapalan Gawsalyan (Senior) became 3rd in the Anti-Drug
Contest Exhibition at District Level.
V.Gowthaman won the 1st place at District Level in the Essay Competition conducted by the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka to celebrate the International Human Rights Day-2007 in the Upper Division.
K.Balakumaran won the 1st Place in the Essay Competition conducted by the Central Environment Authority in connection with the Global Environment Day.
T.Sam Niroshan won a Special Prize at Provincial Level for the Essay Writing
Competition conducted in connection with the International Peace Day.
S.Gajendran won a Merit Award in the Junior Division at the All-Island Science Fiction
Contest for School Children organized by the Physics Students’ Society of the University of Kelaniya to commemorate the “World Year of Physics-2005”.
A.V.Ajanthan won the 1st place in the All island Essay Writing Competitions conducted by the Sri Lanka Postal Department.
CLUBS AND SOCIETIES
Media Club (English & Tamil) was inaugurated on the 31st of January 2008 to promote the writing skills of students, and for reporting on school functions.
The Interact Club organized a Blood Donation Campaign where 70 Students and 10 Staff donated blood to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital.
Agricultural Science Club, Student Christian Movement, Cub Scouts, Commerce Union,
Astronomical Association, Catholic Union, Chess Club, A/L Union, IT Club, English Union,
Inthu Manram, Leo Club, Photographic Club, Philatelic Club, Junior Red Cross Society, St.
John Ambulance Brigade, Science Union, Tamil Manram, Scout Troop and Sea Scout Troop organised various programmes for the benefit of the students. The Hatton National Bank
Students’ Savings Unit “Singithi,” the People’s Bank Students’ Savings Unit “Sisu Uthana” and the Bank of Ceylon Students’ Savings Unit “Ran Kekulu” are functioning well at the College. The College Magazine will carry detailed reports of the respective Clubs and Societies and their activities and programmes for the year.
GAMES & ATHLETICS
Athletics
The Annual Inter-House Athletic Meet was held on the 09th of February 2008. The Chief
Guests were Dr.K.Sivanesan, Staff Physician & Lecturer in Medicine, and Mrs.Jeyagowry
Sivanesan.
A new Ground Record was established by A.Edwin Joy in the 400 m race (timing
1min 3.5 sec.). A 400 m race and a Walking Race were introduced for non participants in order to ensure total student participation.
Primary School Sports Meet was held on the 23rd of February 2008 with Mr.G.Sivapalan,
School Works Engineer, Department of Education, and Mrs.Vasanthimala Sivapalan,
Divisional Education Officer, Jaffna as Chief Guests.
In the Athletic Meet organised by the Department of Education the following places were obtained.

The Under 13 ‘A’ Team played against the schools in the out-stations in the Astra Trophy
Tournament and became champions at Provincial Level and lost in the semi finals against
Chandranantha Buddhist Vidyalaya, Kandy.
The Central – St John’s Cricket Match (“Battle of the North” / Big Match) was held from 17th to 19th April 2008 and we lost by an innings. The Limited over Match was played on the 24th of April, which was lost by one wicket.

THE COLLEGE HOSTEL
The College Hostel continues to function satisfactorily with 42 students. We have 9 students from the Badulla District (Passara). We hope that this arrangement will create an opportunity for us to establish friendly relations with students from other provinces. After an interval of many years, the Boarders’ Day was celebrated on the 3rd of July 2008 with Mr.& Mrs. A. Henry as Chief Guests. I wish to thank the Senior Hostel Master Mr.A.Augustine, the Hostel Masters and the kitchen staff for their work well done.
THE CHRISTIAN CHILDREN’S FUND OF CANADA
The Christian Children’s Fund of Canada, which helped us during the last 30 years, has wound up its activities from March this year. 330 students benefited from this project and have shown improvement in their studies and co-curricular activities. We sincerely thank the
CCFC Canada for their worthy support.
THE COLLEGE MAGAZINE
“Thanapalan Number”, the College Magazine-2006, has been released, and the next issue will be named “Thevasagayam Number” in honour of our late Principal Dr. E.S.Thevasagayam.

THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME (ELDP)
Awards Day for the 2007 - 3rd Batch of students was held on the 18th of January 2008. 26 students were awarded certificates. The students who scored above “7” were allowed to follow a one-year Preliminary Teacher Training Programme at the school.
The 2008 - 1st Batch of students completed this course, and certificates were awarded on the
19th of June 2008. The classes for the 2nd Batch have commenced and nine students have enrolled.
CHARITY WORK
Tsunami Schools Twinning Programme
Our U-13 and U-15 Soccer Teams played friendly matches against Manatkadu RCTMS. We selected one student from Manatkadu RCTMS for 2008 admission with full scholarship inclusive of hostel accommodation. Our staff conducted First Aid Classes at Manatkadu
RCTMS and awarded certificates. I visited Kallappadu GTMS on the 22nd of August 2007.
General
Financial assistance was given to five undergraduates of the Faculty of Law, Colombo, who were from the hill-country.
Provided financial assistance to two children (for eye & kidney treatment) and two adults.
(Amputation & Renal transplant.)

A Pilot Spoken English Examination was conducted by the English Language Teaching Unit of the college. 121 students sat for the Examination.

Leather Ball was introduced to the U/11 Cricket. The “Battle of the Babes,” was held on the 12th of October with Mr. T. Jeganathan as Chief Guest. Grade 5B became Champions.
Training in basic skills in games, Spoken English classes for examinations, Cubs &
Scouts classes, and Instrumental Music classes (Western & Eastern) are conducted after school hours from 2.30 to 4.00 p.m., and on Saturdays on a rotation basis.
A Workshop for Teachers was held on the 4th of August to review and plan the activities.
Staff & Family Year-end Get-together was held on the 11th of December.
Gandhi’s Visit Commemoration Day - 80th Anniversary was celebrated on the 16th of November. Competitions - Essay writing and Verse writing in Tamil & English, and Kilithaddu - were organised for students. Mr. S.Pathmanathan, Retired Principal, Palaly
Teachers’ College was the Chief Guest.
A Pilot Summer Vacation Programme was organised. One student from South participated in the programme last year, and it was a success.
The inaugural meeting of the Christian Studies Unit was held on the 6th of March 2008.
The Archdeacon of Jaffna the Ven S.P.Nesakumar delivered the message. The Unit conducts classes for school leavers and teachers on Thursdays at 5.00 p.m.
We admitted two differently-abled children (Blind) from the Nuffield School in the G.C.E.O/L Second year.
The Agricultural Club organised a Home Garden Project with 150 students from 16
neighbouring schools.
The Student Christian Movement organised a Workshop on Post-war peace themes where
200 students from Jaffna, Vaddukodai, Uduvil and Point Pedro participated.
Interact Club, Leo Club, Scout Troop and St. John Ambulance jointly organised a threeday
Workshop on “Career Guidance towards Community Development”, where 200 students from 12 neighbouring schools including Nuffield School took part.
200 students are involved in the “Peace through Culture” Project, and have produced an
Eastern Opera MALARUM PUTHUYUHAM. (“Dawn of an Era”)
